Pharmacy First
Pharmacy First and Pharmacy First Plus
This is an exciting new concept from the NHS that allows pharmacies to provide more treatments and advice.
We provide this as a walk in service and usually no appointments are needed.
If you have a minor illness, a pharmacy is the first place you should go for advice.
A trained member of the pharmacy team will give you advice, provide medicine if needed. They may need to refer you to another healthcare professional such as your GP practice, dentist, optometrist or another NHS service if they feel your condition needs further investigation or more specialist care.
Pharmacy first plus Service allows prescribing pharmacists to assess and prescribe for a range of conditions and we offer this in all of our pharmacies. A trained member of the team will refer you to the pharmacist if needed, this service allows pharmacies to provide more treatments and advice without seeing their GP.
Treatments may include advice, over the counter remedies, antibiotics or steriod. This is a list of the common conditions that the pharmacy can provide advice, over the counter medicines or provide treatment on the NHS. Appointments are not usually need.
A prescription for antibiotics will only be provided if needed.
Since the introduction of the service we have been put under a lot of pressure by some patients to prescribe inappropriately- Remember- most conditions dont need antibiotics! Most sore throats and chest infections are caused by viruses and many infections are self limiting and will clear up by themselves, so in most cases antibiotics are not neccessary. Simple self care or over the counter remedies will help.
